Allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, mold and cockroach droppings all trigger allergic reactions.
There is no shortage of chemical remedies … it’s a billion-dollar industry! But, the side effects of medications can be problematic. Using essential oils is a more natural way to ease the allergy burden—or to augment your over-the-counter support. Some of the most commonly used essential oils for relieving allergy symptoms include certified organic Lavender, Lemon, Tea Tree and Peppermint.
Calming, clean-scented Lavender is cleansing and calming. In addition to helping you maintain healthy breathing and strong airways, Lavender’s sweet scent promotes relaxation and aids in reducing headaches. For a topical remedy, massage a few drops of diluted Lavender oil under your nose and apply directly to the skin every two hours during problem episodes, or diffuse for nighttime relief.
The fresh scent of Lemon essential oil is cleansing and anti-inflammatory. It can be beneficial for people who feel allergies most in their head. This gentle citrus oil is both focusing and uplifting – a great combination for those struggling with exhaustion and mental fatigue. Plus, one of the best ways to minimize indoor allergens is by getting rid of dust mites – the most common trigger of allergy symptoms inside the home. Use a damp cloth with a few drops of full-strength Lemon to clean surfaces. Place several drops of Lemon essential oil into your vacuum cleaner bag so that the motor can diffuse it as you move through your rooms.
Many harsh chemicals found in household cleaners have adverse effects and can aggravate symptoms in people who have allergies. If you are sensitive, use environmentally friendly cleaning products made with natural ingredients. Add 20 drops of certified organic Tea Tree oil and a tablespoon of white vinegar to one cup of water. The mixture can then be used to spray areas prone to mold, and across mattresses and other textiles to kill dust mites.
Peppermint oil can help support the airways and relieve headaches. This sweet mentholated scent aids allergy sufferers with feelings of easy breathing. Experiment with different amounts of Peppermint oil to find what works best for you and your family. On a side note, these powerful essential oils are also a serendipitous combination. Try one or two drops of each blended together in your diffuser to get your body through your next allergy attack with natural relief and a soothing effect.
